Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a birth certificate?
Timing varies by state and county. With a completed pre-birth parentage order, a certified birth certificate is typically available within 1–3 weeks after birth.
How do pre-birth and post-birth orders affect timing?
A post-birth order generally requires extra time for court proceedings and updates to the birth record.
How many certified copies should we order?
We recommend 4–6 copies for passport and travel document applications, authentication, and future use.
What if the birth certificate contains an error?
Corrections must follow state or county procedures. Carefully check all names and details before the birth registration is submitted.
Can someone apply on IP‘s behalf if IPs’re outside the U.S.?
Some jurisdictions allow authorized representatives to apply. Requirements vary and may include notarized authorization or supporting documents. Confirm these before your baby’s due date.
When can we apply for our baby’s U.S. passport?
You can generally begin once the official U.S. birth certificate is available. If a post-birth parentage order is required, allow time for the court process and birth record updates.
